Blog #5 – A Home Game Away From Home

This week’s home game didn’t feel like a real home game at all. Even though the weather was finally dry, the heavy rain from the past few days completely destroyed our own field. The grass was soft, muddy, and unsafe to play on, so the game had to be moved to the Chico State grass field. Their field is in much better condition than ours, which makes sense considering how well they maintain it (Chico State Athletics). Still, it felt strange to play a “home” game somewhere else.

Warming up on a proper grass field made a huge difference. The ball moved cleaner, our touches felt sharper, and it actually felt like real football again. But even with the better field, the feeling was different — no familiar lines, no usual setup, no real home atmosphere. We tried to settle in quickly and keep the focus on the game. Both teams started strong, and the match looked even from the beginning.

The first half was competitive, with each side creating chances. We had some good looks at goal, but the final finish was missing. In the second half, the game stayed tight, and around the 70th minute they managed to score after a messy moment in our box. It was frustrating because we felt like we were in control for parts of the match. But instead of dropping our heads, we pushed forward with even more energy.

In the final minutes, we showed real fight. We kept pressing, kept believing, and finally scored a late equalizer that lifted everyone. A 1–1 draw wasn’t the perfect result, but it showed our mentality. Even on a different field, in a situation that didn’t feel like home, we fought until the end. Sometimes those moments say more about a team than the score itself — just like many coaches say about the importance of finishing strong (US Youth Soccer Coaching Tips).
